Elizabeth Milburn Park patrons will soon be able to access free wireless internet.
Cedar Park City Council voted to approve a pilot program agreement with Time Warner Cable at their last meeting. Time Warner Cable will provide internet access to the park for the next three years. The cable company will pay for the installation, configuration and support of the wireless system.
According to Tim Scott, Director of Information Services, one of the benefits of the pilot program is that there will be no cost to the city.
“Council has long expressed interest in exploring free wireless internet options in the city’s parks,” Scott said.
Time Warner Cable approached the city late last summer, and the two started to negotiate an agreement at that time.
“We worked with them to develop an installation plan in support for the sheer volume of visitors that we get at that park through some of our events,” Scott said.
The pilot program will allow current Time Warner Cable customers to receive unlimited time usage of the Wi-Fi in the park. According to city documents, those who are not customers will still obtain 60 minutes per day at no cost, with the choice to purchase additional usage once the time expires.
